In collaboration with Urban Climate Architects, we are designing the greening of The Urban Woods in Delft.
The Urban Woods stands as one of the first apartment complexes in the Netherlands featuring a primary structure built entirely of timber. For this unique project, we sought a solution that would allow for intensive rooftop greening while remaining strictly within the limits of the building's structural load capacity. This also markt our very first project using custom Jungle Blocks.
Timber construction
Although the timber construction imposed strict weight limitations, our lightweight solution easily met all engineering requirements. The result is a fully lightweight and modular roof garden. Our Jungle Blocks are pre-eminently suited for greening locations like the rooftop of The Urban Woods, where traditional greening systems are not a viable option. Due to the timber construction, there was a stringent requirement for a maximum saturated weight of 250 kg/m². Jungle Blocks comfortably satisfy this technical mandate.
Custom Jungle Block
Each Jungle Block was designed with total creative freedom. Leveraging our 3D printing technology, we were able to create a completely customized verdant landscape. Furthermore, the installation was remarkably efficient: the entire roof garden was hoisted onto the building in just a single day.
The objective was to transform the roof into a biodiverse sanctuary that buffers rainwater and mitigates heat stress. We had the privilege of bringing this vision to life by creating a genuine "Urban Jungle" that literally provides the environment with room to breathe.
The Urban Woods embodies our vision of bridging nature and technology. These innovative timber buildings are designed not merely to preserve biodiversity post-construction, but to actively enhance it.
