For the University of Amsterdam, we installed eight round Jungle Blocks at Binnengasthuisstraat in Amsterdam. This urban greening project is part of the multi-year redevelopment of the University Quarter and demonstrates how temporary green solutions can make a lasting contribution to livable, green campuses in the city.
The City of Amsterdam has a clear ambition: the selected tree species will eventually be planted permanently in the ground. However, underground infrastructure - such as cables and utility lines -currently makes direct planting impossible. It is precisely in this complex urban context that Jungle Blocks provide the ideal solution for temporary urban greening.
Thanks to the modular and relocatable design of the Jungle Blocks, trees and greenery can be introduced to the square immediately, without any intervention in the underground infrastructure. This makes them particularly well-suited for inner-city projects where space, logistics, and existing infrastructure are limiting factors - such as at this university square.
The Jungle Blocks will remain at Binnengasthuisstraat for the next three to five years. Afterwards, they can be seamlessly replanted in open ground or relocated to another site in the city. This is how we combine temporary deployment with enduring ecological and spatial value - a smart investment in the green city of tomorrow.
